Place Value Fun!

Today we played a math game to help reinforce the work we've been doing with place value.  This is a really easy game to play at home if you want to try it out with your child.  All you need is one 6-sided die.  Each player writes down four blanks on their paper (like this ___, ___ ___ ___) representing place values up to thousands place.  Players take turns rolling the die and placing their number in one of their blank spaces.  The person with the highest number at the end is the winner.  You can make this a little more challenging by adding more blanks to bring your numbers up to hundred-thousands or even millions place if you want.  I also encourage students to practice reading the number correctly after they fill in all of their blanks.  If you really want to give them practice with what we're doing in class, have them take their finished number and write it in expanded form and number name.  For example, if my number was 5,621 then expanded form would look like this: 5,000 + 600 + 20 + 1.  The number name would look like this: five thousand, six hundred twenty-one.
