Science Extra Credit Story #1

One of the optional extra credit projects for science was to write a story from the point-of-view of an animal whose habitat has some sort of disaster.  Over the next few days, I'll post the 3 different stories that were passed in.  We'll start with Maddie from Mr. Rand's room.

Disaster of the Forest
By: Maddie

Our forest has gotten destroyed and now it’s only a matter of time before we have to move.  Our home is now only a dirtland with few plants  available.   I ask my father if it’s going to be ok but when he says yes I don’t believe him, I hope we can survive a little longer in this place that I used to call home.  Sadly other animals are still in this area, so we must fight for food if we want it.  But us deer aren't made for fighting, so if we find food we run with it or eat it quickly. Were still struggling  to find food,  we’re getting weaker and weaker, one of us might die. My nightmare came true just this morning dad was killed by a wolf, they don’t usually bother eating us, suspiciously they have stayed here way longer than usually do,  one month.  More disaster is coming from the humans, there Knocking down more trees and know boulders, Animals in the forest are running like crazy.  Mother tells me to run as far as you can.  I run as fast as  I can but as night comes I  learn from other forest animals have been dying off because of the plant shortage.  I’m afraid  that I’ll die off to.  I met with my mother just this morning, she’s in no condition to travel and she’s very sick from not eating much .
I woke up this morning and found my mother drinking  the remains of our stream.  When she sees me she tells me that we’d be on the move through the forest to find food. For if we stayed here long then the plants would be gone and we would have  no food left.  We’re on the move today but it is still dark , as I walk I see that other animals are sleeping while other animal families are asking to come along.   My mother accepts,”after all” says my mother “ There’s only a few families”.  I woke up to the sound of bulldozers ,  I  ran  as fast as  my legs  could go, luckily getting out out the way.  But then I realized  mom Hadn’t woken up.  Then I froze, I heard a noise , I turned around and saw my mom.   I ran to see her,  but as I came up to she collapsed.  I looked up at the hill, men with weird  looking sticks looked at her and run at me.  I tried to get my mother up but it was no use.   I run for my life, past forest animals until I came to where the bulldozers stopped and turned around.

That night I told my parent’s friends, the squirrels, that mom had died.  We discussed what we would do to stop them and later asked me when we would be leaving.  I told them  I was going alone. They understood, but they asked if they could  help in any way , I thanked them for the offer  but I told them I would be fine on my own.   I left early at sunrise,  It would be a long journey  so I would make stops on the way.
The night creeps over the land fast.  But I stop to sleep it the starry sky.  It’s hot, very hot, so hot that I lay in the shade longer than my normal breaks.  When It starts to cool down, I start back up on my journey.  Another night comes without me, plants are more scarce than ever.   I’m afraid that I won’t reach my Destination alive.  The sunrise has come and yet I was up before that.  I have almost reached my destination but I am not sure what my plan is for stopping the humans from wiping out our entire forest.
I stay behind a tree, but what I see is terrible.  The humans have put down a hard,  foul smelling surface.    Any animal they see is either run over or sent with people into a large building.  But there’s more.  The humans have torn down most of the trees in sight.  Luckily, I have this one to hide behind.  Now that I think about it, It’s going to be hard stopping them.  But then I think of a plan that will definitely stop the humans.
