The Disaster
By: Lily
One day I, Sam the wolf, woke up and thought to myself, "I hope it rained last night. It hasn't rained in so long because of the drought." I walked out of the den, and looked at the ground, the grass was brown, the air was dry, and it seemed to be quieter in the forest than usual because all of the animals are starting to die. My stomach grumbled, I'd been eating less and less each day since the drought started. All the rabbits, squirrels, and mice were dying. I had spent many hours each day looking for prey, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find any. I walked back to the den and sat down next to my sister, Daisy. She seemed just as hungry and tired as I was. "Sam, since all of the plants dies, almost all of the prey have died as well," said Daisy. "My family needs food and it doesn't seem like there is going to be any rain for a while." I got up, and walked outside again. Then, I saw something moving in the bushes. It was a rabbit. I hid behind a bush, and waited, then I pounced! I looked down and there it was, a little brown rabbit. It was small, but at least it was food. "Daisy! I caught a rabbit." Daisy ran out of the den and looked at the rabbit in my paws. "Great!" I brought into the den and everyone was already going back to sleep, but I stayed awake and waited for everyone to fall asleep, then I got back up and walked outside. I wondered when is it going to rain. I looked at the ground. The grass was even more dry since this morning. I waited and waited for another rabbit to come. I hid behind the bush so long that my legs started to get tired, and after a while I went back to the den and went to sleep. The next morning I woke up and saw a little squirrel running around looking for food. I slowly walked along the side of the den and into the bushes. I was getting ready to pounce but the squirrel saw me, and got away. I walked back to the den and tried to go back to sleep but, everyone was already waking up so I didn't get much more sleep. Daisy looked outside and said, "it still hasn't rained." Daisy left the den for a while, and when she came back, she had a squirrel. "I caught a squirrel," said Daisy. "Good," I said. Daisy sat down next to me. She looked really tired. "How early did you wake up?" she asked. "Really early," I said. I got up, looked outside, and saw something move in the bushes. A rabbit jumped out. I slowly walked outside and into the bushes. Right when I was about to pounce I saw another wolf. He appeared to be looking at the rabbit too. I slowly made my way toward the rabbit and hoped the wolf couldn't see me. When I looked up at him, I knew that he had seen me. He started running so quietly I almost didn't notice. I started running too. I was determined to get the rabbit. I felt a rain drop and the wolf and I both stopped and looked at the sky. I remembered the rabbit and ran silently toward it, making sure that the other wolf couldn't hear me. I grabbed the rabbit, and when the other wolf wasn't looking, I ran for the den. "Daisy it's raining, come outside!" Daisy and I stood together, in the rain.
